Valsamakis Ceramics

The ceramic creations of Panos Valsamakis have left their mark on the history of Greek art and have been distinguished within and beyond the country. There are dozens of important milestones in the life of the great ceramist, including his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, the artistic direction at the Kerameikos Factory and also at the AKEL at Lavrio, as well as the construction of his residence-workshop in collaboration with Michalis Orros in Marousi, in the 60s. The workshop continues to operate, and since 2015 it has been run by Sofia and Panos Valsamakis, the grandchildren of the creator. With respect to the artistic heritage, and taking advantage of the rich archive found in the workshop, they create handmade decorative paintings, plates and tiles, in a style that combines folk tradition with expressionism and realism.

Panos Valsamakis’ Marousi house, located in the “Paradisos” area, was designed to suit both his living and working needs. The challenge was to incorporate a permanent exhibition of his works, his workshop, and his residence. To solve this, a low building was constructed in 1962 based on the plans of architect Michalis Orros. Orros’ main focus was to showcase ceramics as a primary decoration element, while harmoniously blending it with other materials such as stone and wood. This can be seen in the design of the furniture, which integrates ceramics and wood. The other building materials were chosen to neutralize the colors and highlight Panos Valsamakis’ artworks. The house is a two-story urban home on two levels, designed to complement the avenue view.

Today, anyone can visit the house/workshop during working hours.
